Connections Tips & Strategies

Expert strategies to help you solve the NYT Connections puzzle every day.

Tips by Difficulty Level

Start with the Obvious

Easiest

Scan all 16 words first. If four words jump out as an obvious group, grab them immediately. The yellow category is usually the most straightforward.

Look for Word Patterns

Easy

Many categories involve words that can precede or follow a common word. Think '___ Ball', '___ House', or 'Fire ___'. These are often green or blue difficulty.

Watch for Red Herrings

Medium

The puzzle designers intentionally include words that could fit multiple categories. Don't commit too quickly - consider alternative groupings.

Save Purple for Last

Hardest

The purple category often has wordplay, obscure references, or tricky connections. Solve the easier categories first to narrow down options through elimination.

Advanced Strategies

Think Beyond Synonyms

Categories can be based on pop culture, geography, science, or any topic. A category might be 'Things in a dentist office' or 'Taylor Swift songs'.

Consider Multiple Meanings

Words like 'BANK' could relate to rivers or money. 'SPRING' could be a season, a coil, or water source. Always think about alternate definitions.

Look for Letter Patterns

Sometimes categories involve words that all contain certain letters, start with the same letter, or have double letters. Pay attention to spelling.

Trust Your First Instinct

If you see a clear group, go for it. Overthinking often leads to second-guessing correct answers. The obvious answer is often right.

Use Process of Elimination

Once you've identified 2-3 words in a group, look at which remaining words could complete it. Sometimes backwards reasoning is faster.

Know Common Category Types

Common patterns include: compound words, things found in X, words that follow Y, names of Z, and '___ something' phrases.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Guessing randomly - Always have a reason for your grouping
  • Ignoring word forms - Plural vs singular, verb tenses matter
  • Overthinking yellow - The easiest category is usually simple
  • Forgetting pop culture - Movies, music, and TV are common themes

Practice Makes Perfect

The best way to improve is to play daily. Each puzzle teaches you new connection patterns and category types.
